Operation Squirrel is the
Project Name for all fund raising efforts geared towards the building of a new
extension at the Lytton Theatre in Vardon Road, Stevenage. The name has been chosen to follow
on in the footsteps of Operation Beaver which was the name given to
the original fund raising exercise that allowed the Lytton Players to move to their
existing premises.
Over the last two years it has been recognised that the Lytton Theatre will not last for ever and two schemes have been suggested. The first involved building a purpose built 200 seat theatre on ground adjacent to the current building. The second involved building an extension to the existing building allowing for a better stage and audience facilities.
In order to ensure that both of these schemes were looked at thoroughly a task force was set up. This task force was made up of experts within the Lytton Players and would look at Lottery grants, fund raising as well as work that the Lytton Players might undertake themselves. The task force has been very active, and the project is now well under way. The new building layouts were presented at the AGM to the membership and approval was received to continue with the next phase.
The project can be broken down into three main parts:
A new theatre area. |
New toilets with facilities for the disabled. |
The refurbishment of the remainder of the building. |
Work has already started on all three of the above areas. The most obvious signs being the new kitchen equipment, new bar furniture and a new make-up area and seating for the green room. Coming shortly will be hot air dryers for the toilets and the commencement of 'Operation Easy Access' which will involve extending the existing toilet facilities to allow for disabled access and use. In addition the front entrance will be redesigned to include a ramp and double doors.
Keep your eye out for fund raising events that contain the squirrel logo and give us your support. Watch out for Buy A Brick fund raising exercise due to start shortly in the bar area. Thanks for your support so far and keep up the good work
