KEN CAMPBELL
Friday
3rd October 2003 Tickets £10.00 Box Office: 01438 840519 |
Quotes from reviews: Campbell can create that blissful rising hysteria in which virtually anything can seem side-splittingly funny (Time Out) Like any true artist his genius is in his ability to latch on to a subject and then make you see it in a completely new light (What's On) If the ministry of silly walks were to publish a white paper on tap dancing it would have roughly the same feel (The Times) Both describing and demonstrating the transcendental power of comedy. I can't wait for part two (Metro) The funniest solo act in British theatre (Daily Express) KEN CAMPBELL BIOGRAPHY Ken Campbell's productions and exploits in British Theatre, over the last quarter century, as playwright, actor, director and comedian are legendary. The Barn Theatre Company present THE LURE OF THE REICHENBACH A One-Act Play by Lesley Bilton Sunday 1st June 2003 Tickets £6.00 on the door |
What is "the lure of the Reichenbach"? It is the term authors use to describe the desire they have to destroy their most successful creations, and stems from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's decision to kill off Sherlock Holmes by sending him down the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland after a final confrontation with his arch-enemy, Professor Moriaty. In Lesley Bilton's one-act play, we learn how the young Arthur Conan Doyle, a struggling general practitioner, came to supplant his meagre income by writing historical novels. They are unsuccessful, so his housekeeper suggests that a murder mystery would be more popular. But who would be his detective? We meet his college professor, Dr Joseph Bell, and his friend and fellow GP, Dr Budd, upon both of whom Conan Doyle bases his creation Sherlock Holmes. The first novel, "A Study in Scarlet'", is a modest success, as is the second, but it is only when Doyle begins to write short stories for the "Strand" magazine that true financial success follows. Doyle is sufficiently encouraged to leave Holmes aside and return to his historical novels of the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, but the public and his publisher clamour for more Holmes stories. Doyle asks for more and more money - and they give it, willingly - until finally Doyle has had enough and decides to kill Holmes off. The uproar is tremendous. "Keep Holmes Alive" societies are formed. But Doyle is adamant - he will not bring Holmes back. So why does he?
